San Diego Recycling and Waste Removal Info

Home

San Diego wants to go green and there are a number of options available to become an integral part of reducing our waste. What can you do to reduce your impact? How can you properly dispose of your refuse? There’s tons of information along with innovative programs at your fingertips. Some waste studies indicate that two-thirds of San Diego’s waste stream can be recycled.

This year just over 1.7 million tons of waste are expected to hit our landfills alone. That leaves just under 20 years of time before landfills (Miramar) fill to capacity. Did you know that the City of San Diego’s waste reduction and recycling programs, along with innovations and increased recycling, have helped extend the landfill’s working life, originally scheduled to close as early as 1995?

According to the City San Diegans throw away enough recyclables to:

    1. Energize over 181,000 households for a year;
    2. Conserve 3,355,937 barrels of oil;
    3. Fuel over 400 cars for a year (156,610,400 gallons/25 miles per gallon/15,000 miles/year);
    4. Risk our city being fined $10,000 per day by the State.

It just takes one act of change to reduce our impact and waste, let’s get started!
